What better way to celebrate Punky Mom’s Love is Love month than have a look at some of the ways in which our Mamas have become hitched. From the traditional English weddings to a handfasting ceremony to a Vegas Star Trek themed wedding…they all show personality and make us feel all gooey inside and want to get married all over again. Check out the pictures below of all these beautiful alternative weddings from our Punky Mom members.
Love is Love is an important movement and with the help of our LGBTQ+ members we worked to create this month long directive of love inspired posts.
Caragh says that their theme evolved from a flamingo and a pineapple and then “grew into a colour-smash celebration of all thing bright, vibrant, and fun!” Instead of traditional readings in the ceremony Caragh’s brother read A Scientific Romance which had everyone in hysterics, and her friend created & read a Buffy/X-Files mash up on love as they were huge fans of those shows. Caragh says that her favourite aspect was how involved everyone was “whether it was making tissue paper flowers, spray painting pineapples, or dying a veil pink on the day.”
Tawny tied the knot when her daughter was 3 months old “I met my soul mate and I wanted to cement it as a family, the fact our children were at our wedding made it all the more special” Tattoos play an important role in their relationship so much so in fact that Tawny had a temporary-tattoo booth at the reception so everyone could get one.
Linnea had a Summer Solstice themed wedding with a twist. They were married in a beautiful mountain meadow just a couple of miles from the house that her father and mother shared for nearly 4 decades. Her husband and all of the groomsmen wore zoot suits, and the entire wedding party wore Converse. Linnea and her husband had theirs custom made, complete with each others names on the back.
The theme for Charlotte’s wedding was the beach and seaside. The wedding was very family orientated and Charlotte loved “just hanging out with my guys! I have 5 younger brothers, all of which came along. It was brilliant to see the family old and young playing on the beach.” They finished the day listening to music in their beach huts.
Roisin said that for her getting married was “like the next piece of the puzzle” after having their two children together. The wedding was small and low key with music playing an important role. A family friend played songs in one room whilst upstairs they had they had created their own playlist. Bowie’s Let’s Dance was their first dance. Roisin said it was important for them to have a “statement song”.
Roslyn says her wedding was a bit of a whirlwind as they met in June and married the following May. The wedding reception was held in a community cinema. They played a few of their favourite films. They ordered pizza. They had to pop across to the Co-Op supermarket to restock the bar and the wedding cake was Han Solo trapped in carbonite.
The first thing everyone asked Kate was what colour she wanted, Kate’s response “AAAAAALL the colours and I couldn’t choose so I ended up choosing them all” They mixed the colour theme with their passion of vintage horror using horror/sci-fi comic postcards as invitations and save the date cards. Kate also made her own wedding shoes using her collection of vintage horror comics.
Nicola didn’t have a strict theme but was greatly inspired by sugar skulls and the Mexican day of the dead. Nicola loved that the day was about her and her husband “We never compromised, everything was 100% us. The wedding was small and intimate and the party was a good old knees up with good food and dancing.”
Music played a very important part in Natalie’s wedding day. Her husband is a musician and Natalie is “I’m a … well I am a fan.” Her husband arranged for the lead singer of one of Natalie’s favourite local bands to perform on the day. Natalie’s brother in law’s band brought the house down with a great mix of funk, Motown and dance “classics” followed by their own ITunes mix which they had asked guests to pick their favourite songs when they RSVP’d. They had everything from Megadeth to Aqua.
Zelle’s wedding took place in a hunting lodge in Lochinver, Scotland. The Ceremony was in a log barn and was a Pagan Handfasting. Zelle wrote the rituals herself and her old university professor who is a member of the Druid Order, married them. Zelle said the evening was like a “massive house party for adults except with whisky by the fire instead of puking in flower pots.”
Emma had a Star Trek themed wedding in Las Vegas. There was a Borg and a Klingon as wedding guests. The Star Trek Experience was a walk through attraction where you could get ‘beamed up’ and served “smoking cocktails and ship shape pizza”. Emma said it was really important her guests had an epic experience.
Gillian’s wedding didn’t start out having a theme. They were married in the Caves in Edinburgh. Gillian wanted it to be glittery and soft but edgy at the same time. They had bird-cages and pearls, over the top pink glitter and hundreds of fairy lights, flowers and candles. The tables were Star Wars planets and there were temporary tattoos on the tables at dinner “so our guests who weren’t tattooed could fit in!”

Despite what my carefully curated Pinterest board might suggest, me and boyfriend are not engaged in the technical sense. We gave up any ideas of having matrimonial money to burn when I began my Masters but we have, however, had many a late night conversation (whilst being kicked in the ribs by our smallest creation) about how we’d like to get married. This has mostly been about all the cheesy things we would like to avoid when we eventually get around to it, and one is a walk down the aisle to a super predictable, generic song. That led to the creation of this playlist and it’s now basically all I listen to; romantic, dreamy, kinda sad at times. Sounds a lot like love to me.
