A roundup list of my favorite free podcasts at the moment. I’ll be writing another Top 5 very soon since there are so many great ones out there. Keep your eyes and ears open! All these podcasts are free for Androids or Apples. You can use a variety of podcasts players if you don’t have the options on your phone.
Hosted by Deborah Frances-White, a brilliant comedian and usually co-hosted with other hilarious and powerful women. An honest, ever-growing and funny look at feminism that owns its flaws and doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you think that sometimes you’re a bit crap at being a feminist and want to learn whilst splitting your sides (a popular tagline of the podcast “unexplained public laughter disrupts the patriarchy”) with hilarious women and trans/non-binary folx) then The Guilty Feminist is for you! Also great guest appearances by Sofie Hagen.
Ever want to love comedy panel shows but cringe at the sight of 5 straight white dudes and the token woman/person of colour/person who isn’t a straight white dude just stuck on the end being talked over because there’s no room between the entitled egos in the room? Well, enter Global Pillage! A diversity based panel quiz show created and hosted by the The Guilty Feminist’s Deborah Frances-White. Two teams of two people as far from Straight White Dudes as you can get, face off against each other and the studio audience (known as the Hivemind) on a particular theme chosen for each episode. It’s hilarious, informative and really bloody refreshing!
This podcast needs every content and trigger warning ever invented! That being said, the host has recently started to include a short introduction to each episode if it has potentially triggering subjects. This is such a broad podcast in terms of theme but it is primarily a storytelling platform. It truly explores and digs into the depth and breadth of the human condition. Stories and situations that you could never imagine yourself in; your worst nightmare, your fantasy, something that you could never even think to happen to anyone, ever! You’ll laugh, cry, rage, be reduced to a quivering mess but every story is always beautifully told and respected. You will think, learn, be inspired and also need a long hot shower. New book!
Radio 4’s newest addition to their vast library of brilliant podcasts. Grownupland tackles all manner of mature topics that many of us so-called adults still have trouble with. Hosted by comedians Bisha K Ali and Mae Martin, podcaster Ned Sedgwick. There are also inserts from Steve Ali, a Syrian refugee who gladly puts a lot of our problems into perspective with his experiences fleeing from war and living in the Calais Jungle. They use interesting and informative clips from other Radio 4 shows. The whole podcast is sweet, funny and just feels like a chat amongst friends.
A feminist podcast from under the How Stuff Works banner. Hosted by Emilie Aries and Bridget Todd who are two amazing, smart and successful women. They take on current and hard-hitting feminist topics such as race, abortion, homelessness, domestic violence and more specific matters like how “Mass Shootings Are A Feminist Issue”. They make incredible, intelligent and research-backed arguments on subjects that affect every woman on the globe. The podcast mainly focuses on topics in the US but they can still be relevant and relatable to international listeners. Episodes to note are:
“How Clinic Escorts Work”
“Can A Marriage Be Feminist?”
“This Black History Month, Don’t Forget About The Women!”
“What Is Benevolent Sexism?”
“Pregnant In Prison”
Rianna is both a gentle hippy elf and a ferocious feminist with a strong taste for justice and fighting inequality. She lives in York with her Husbeast Nikki and tiny feminists Leo and Erik. She’s usually doodling, cooking or writing for her blog www.lonelymama.com. She makes amazing mac and cheese.
