I love women in music. A front woman in a rock band, a solo jazz vocalist, a bad-ass bassist who contributes her gift through anonymous session work. Every one of them delights me and enthralls me. Of course, there is something extra-special about a band made up on only women. The Go-Gos, the Bangles, the Runaways, Dixie Chicks, TLC, En Vogue, Sleater-Kinney. And so now, I present to you – Mariachi Flor de Toloache.
An all-female mariachi band! A thousand times – yes! What is not to like about a group of talented and diverse musicians lovingly and skillfully playing traditional Mexican, Latin American and Caribbean music? Mariachi is usually associated with macho men strutting in spangled suits and serenading couples out for a night on the town at the local Mexican cantina. The women of Mariachi Flor de Toloache take this cliché and turn it to suit their sensibilities.
Started in New York City by the daughter of a Mexican father and Dominican mother, Mireya Ramos, Mariachi Flor de Toloache is a collective of women who love to perform traditional folk music and use traditional folk instruments when they do it. Violins soar, trumpets sound and their voices, their wonderful resounding voices, carry the music to another plane.
While there have been women vocalists associated with mariachi, it is a rare sight to see an entire band of female musicians perform such music. It is a brilliant sight, to see women dressed in traditional attire, down to the studs on their pants and, rather than a sombrero, a lovely flower in the hair. But beyond the presentation, the music rises and circles and captivates.
Mariachi Flor de Toloache is named for the sacred Aztec flower, said to be used in love potions. Their music is a potent brew of brightness and swagger that leads both men and women to swoon in admiration.
