I Put A Spell On You was originally released in 1956 by blues singer Jay Hawkins. He had a decent enough career before putting out that song, but once it was released, Hawkins really got into the theatrics and from that point forward was known as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Originally a love song, the drama of the song makes it a perfect Halloween tune. We definitely have it on our Halloween playlists.
Need help deciding? Let’s start it out by giving you the original, here performed by Hawkins himself all decked out in his voodoo gear and in full theatrical performance. A beautiful sight to behold.
The song is so magical that it didn’t take long for the covers to come. Here is a playlist including the following covers.
First up the siren songstress Annie Lennox (1)
(2) Marilyn Manson
(3) The flawless Nina Simone
(4) Cover by the infamous Bette Midler in the movie Hocus Pocus
(5) How about some Creedence Clearwater Revival
(6) Joe Cockers knows what is up
(7) David Gilmore (Pink Floyd)
8) Jeff Beck (Yardbirds) and Joss Stone performing it together in 2010

Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus for sure!
Gotta go with the original screamin Jay Hawkins! Joss Stone would be second the both of them are bluesy and rock coming together which is the way this song should be performed.
