Hot Fox Jewelry Co. is a contemporary jewelry design company established in 2010 by Rory Robinson, based in BC, Canada.
Rory’s unique style for creating a fusion of everyday jewelry and statement pieces. Incorporating semi-precious stones and crystals, reclaimed leather/suede, feathers, hand painting and vintage beads and findings. All pieces have a natural, earthy vibe that is breathtaking. There are definitely a few things that I spy going onto my wish list.
When was your company founded and where are you based?
I have been making and selling jewelry in various incarnations since 2007 but had not made an official business of it until May of last year when I started Hot Fox Jewelry Co.
I am based in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, BC in Canada
How many are involved in your small business?
It’s just me running all aspects right now from jewelry design and construction to marketing, social media and photography.
What inspired you to start your own company?
I’ve been working creatively for years doing photography and also sold paintings under the moniker Rory Robot for a spell but I have never made an official creative business. I wanted to do something that I could make a career of that would allow me freedom, creativity and that would incorporate some of my other skills. I was interested in doing something that I could create a brand with and jewelry just seemed like the right fit with hopes to expand into other endeavors eventually under the Hot Fox Studios umbrella. Also, I can practice my philosophy of re-purposing and recycling into my work, which is awesome! I re-purpose leather and deconstruct vintage jewelry to reuse beads and findings. At the end of the day I just want to work for myself and it’s a natural next step as an artist/creative to try and make a living at what you love!
Did you have a background in business prior to starting your company?
I have sold online for the past 12 years so I have learned some business along the way but it certainly isn’t an area I have official training in.
Did you run into any problems or resistance while launching?
The hardest part for me was balancing my responsibilities of being a Mother and my life in general. I am also not a naturally organised person so I’ve had to be very mindful and learn new techniques to be more disciplined. I’m still working on it ;)
How do you get the most out of your day?
For me, waking early and getting a good sleep are key to my work/life balance. I do most of my work in the early mornings after my daughter leaves for school at 7:30am. Mornings are mellow with my son so optimally I get 4 hours every weekday morning to focus. He is also in preschool in the afternoons 3 days a week so I try and schedule appointments for the few hours he’s away.
Lists are also tremendously helpful for me to keep track of what needs to get done and deadlines.
Yoga and running are helping me to feel more focused.
How is your family a part of your business choices?
Currently my partner pays most of the bills and I feel grateful for the opportunity to have time to work on this. Since I am still the primary caregiver for both my children, they are learning to be more independent because I am BUSY!
What music inspires you?
I am an audiophile, I love such a variety of music it would be super hard to say what specifically inspires me. I have a real fondness for old blues & soul, 50’s pop, 70’s rock and roots reggae to name a few. But I like music from so many genres!
What is your favourite thing to do when you are not working?
My favourite place to be is at an ocean beach or in the woods.
What do you see in the future for your shop?
I see expanding into clay work as planned and doing more than just jewelry work under the Hot Fox Studios umbrella. I see continued expansion into retail as well as a possible physical location in a few years.
