Hallow Society is a small independent company, comprised of two friends creating things under the influence of stuff they love, with a particular devotion and influence from heavy metal! They’ve got a weakness for killer tees and leather covered in patches – hell, who doesn’t?
I had the pleasure of interviewing this woman in business Sammie from Hallow:
PM: When was your company founded and where are you based?
HS: So talks about Hallow started in Aug/Sept 2013, so we kinda consider that’s when we started – although we spent a full year planning and getting our shit together before we actually launched anything! We’re based in sunny England – I’m just outside of London and Rich in London itself.
PM: How many are involved in your company?
HS: Just two of us! Myself (Sammi) and Richard. Maybe they’ll be a Hallow empire one day…maybe.
PM: What inspired you to start your company?
HS: Man…a bunch of things! It kinda kicked off with longboarding and heavy metal – both Rich and I had wanted to give this kinda thing a go and everything just fell into place. He’s got a ridiculously awesome graphic design background and I had the beauty of time on my hands after kicking in my day job, and then falling pregnant (er, not with Richard btw guys!) So we took the opportunity of mutual interests, a bit of spare time and we starting chatting about what we wanted to do! It was all pretty organic.
PM: Did you have a background in business prior to starting your company?
HS: Hell no! Ha. I’ve worked in fashion (wholesale and e-commerce) for most of my adult life and Richard in graphic design. We’re no business experts! We just know how we wanna do things I guess.
PM: Did you run into any problems or resistance while launching?
HS: Nope, not as such. I think the only thing I’ve felt (personally) is just the problem of trying to ensure you are doing things humanely – and not supporting some god-awful factory that simply shouldn’t exist.
PM: How do you get the most out of your day?
HS: Well…this can be a tough one. It’s pretty DIY over here and I’m a full time mum. It really does vary day to day – these days I try not to get too stressed if I don’t get as much done on one particular day as I’d hoped – although Hallow stuff is pretty much alwaysssss on my mind! You never know when your next idea may just come about. I tend to make a bunch of lists (#rocknroll) and when Casey naps I’m packing orders, replying to emails, updating social media, chatting with Rich about everything we’ve got going on (new products, collabs)…etc, etc. I also spent a lot of time at the Post Office. They love me over there. Things are full on for Rich too who, in addition to Hallow, is a full time freelance graphic designer…Luckily I think we balance things pretty well and manage to make it all work!
PM: How is your family a part of your business choices?
HS: My husband, Anton, has been super supportive of Hallow since the beginning – which was hugely encouraging. Him and Rich have known each other for 98210921 years as well, so it’s all felt very easy going.
PM: What music inspires you?
