Free-Range Momma is a one-woman etsy shop that opened it’s ‘doors’ in January of this year.
Hailing from Houston, Misty, a stay at home mom of three still finds time to create and sell so many damn adorable items! Punky Moms personal favorite being the riotgrrrl onesies. Running a business while staying home with the kids is not an easy task for anyone and there is no doubt that Misty’s hands are full. I interviewed her about how she makes it work:
PM: When was your company founded and where are you based?
FR: Free-Range momma was founded in early January of 2016, but it has been in the works since our second son (Mason) was born. We are based in Houston, TX.
PM: How many are involved in your company?
FR: Free-Range Momma is a one woman shop! My husband helps out from time to time, but he works long hours, so I run it all myself!
PM: What inspired you to start your company?
FR: I’m a stay at home mom with a passion making things at home, and not contributing to corporate society. I try and take things my children enjoy and turn them in to shirts and onesies. I want to provide handmade items for my kids and y’alls!
PM: Did you have a background in business prior to starting your company?
FR: Lol, no. I have bounced around in a bunch of different roles, but never any business roles.
PM: Did you run into any problems or resistance while launching?
FR: Supply chain management is tough. We have three children, so buying massive amounts of bulk can be difficult, but at the end of the day it is all trial and error.
PM: How do you get the most out of your day?
FR: Well, I think spending time with my kids always provides me with the most enjoyment, whether its listening to music and dancing in the living room, or playing in the back yard on the swing set, it makes every day pretty rad.
PM:How is your family apart of your business choices?
FR: My family is apart of everything I do. I am constantly thinking of my kids when I am designing new product. My kids wear everything we make!
PM: What music inspires you?
FR: Oh man, what doesn’t. I have a secret (not so secret any more) crush on Brodie from the Distillers, and a lot of the nineties Riot Grrrl movement is really inspiring to me. Other than those, which I feel like lay the foundation to who I am, there is a lot of old school straight edge hardcore, with very heavy political and social messages. I am SUPER into WolfXDown currently.
PM: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?
FR: As a stay-at-home mom, the work is never over!
PM: What do you see in the future for your shop?
FR: I hope to one day grow so much that it allows my husband to stay at home, and we can do this full time. There would be nothing better than throwing off the shackles of capitalist society, and moving away from bosses, and operating as a husband/wife co-operative!
