If a proper Black Obsidian scrying mirror is not in the budget this year, you can make your own with minimal work and supplies. Whether you want to expand your collection of divination tools, or simply enjoy a goth aesthetic, this is a quick diy project with great results! All you need is a picture frame and a can of high-gloss black spray paint.
When choosing a picture frame, you can use vintage, new, or any old frame you have on hand. Do keep in mind how you will use your scrying mirror. Will it sit on your altar? Hang on the wall? Are you creating your (my) dream collage wall of black mirrors of all shapes and sizes in ornate frames? All valid considerations.
If hanging your scrying mirror, you may want to avoid frames with a stand. Once you’ve decided on your frame, you need to prep the surface before you paint. You’ll have much better results if you properly clean the frame and its glass.
When the glass and frame are completely dry, and free of dust and debris, you can begin painting. With the glass removed from the picture frame, evenly apply a coat of spray paint to one side of the glass. While the glass dries, paint the frame itself. You can use the same high-gloss black spray paint on the frame, or a different color or finish to suit your preference and desired effect. Metal frames with a distressed patina look great as is!
Of course, you will want to practice safe spray painting techniques such as painting outside or in a well ventilated area, wearing a dust mask, protecting surrounding surfaces, etc.
When the first coat of paint is dry, confirm the glass is painted evenly by holding it up to light. If you notice uneven spots or scratches in the paint, apply a second coat.
Allow the glass and frame to dry completely before inserting the glass into the frame with the non-painted side facing out. And that’s it!
