Kathryn and her business Traditional Heart simultaneously entered my radar when I joined the PMUK subgroup back in April [‘16]. Kathryn creates unique jewelry creations and sells vintage treasures from her home city of Leeds, UK. She resides with her partner Matthew and their son Hugo. Traditional Heart is a business all about family, from Matthew offering creative input from time-to-time, to her parents helping with the postal runs for orders.
I make no secret of supporting my local mama gang, and I wear my limited edition Traditional Heart neon sign pin with pride (available in her etsy store now!).
Kathryn just finished her search for brand enthusiasts for Traditional Heart, check her IG and follow along for more news!
PM: How many are involved in your small jewelry business?
TH: All the jewelry is made by me. I get some creative input from my partner Matthew and my mum and dad both help with post office runs.
PM: When was your company founded and where are you based?
TH: I started making jewelry 5+ years ago, but properly made it my main income from May this year! I’m based in my home city of Leeds.
PM: What inspired you to start your own company?
TH: I was inspired to start the company when I realised that I was making things that people actually wanted to wear too. Initially it was just pieces for myself, because I couldn’t find what I wanted on the high street. Instagram was a huge platform for getting my business to take off.
PM: Did you have a background in business prior to starting your company?
TH: I have an accounting and finance degree, with business specific qualifications attached. I also worked in retail for over 10 years, which is beneficial in terms of giving great customer service.
PM: Did you run into any problems or resistance while launching?
TH: My main issue was finding the best place to sell my wares. I originally started on Big Cartel bit that generated minimal sales. I wanted an Etsy account, but at the time you had to have a computer to upload the pictures. Once this changed I switched straight to etsy and never looked back.
PM: How do you get the most out of your day?
TH: I tend to make up all my orders on a night when Hugo, my son, is asleep. Unless it involves any hammering which can be quite noisy. This means I’ve got all day to re-stock the shop and research new ideas and run errands at my leisure.
PM: How is your family a part of your business choices?
TH: My business is all about my family! My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer while I was on maternity leave when my son was only 8 weeks old. I knew from then on I wanted to make Traditional Heart my main job. It means I can focus on the important aspects of life and happiness. This is clichéd, but life is not all about money for me. I get to spend time with people I care about and do a job I love (my mum is recovered now).
PM: What music inspires you?
TH: Music is my life! I would very much struggle to live without it. I’ve got an eclectic taste, from Snoop Dogg to Fleetwood Mac. I hold so many emotional connections to music, good and bad.
PM: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?
TH: Fooooood!!! All the food!! If I’m not working my ideal day would be to go somewhere with my partner and son and eat lovely food. I feel like this is what our family revolves around. We love to cook together and have a homemade curry night every Saturday.
PM: What do you see in the future for your shop?
TH: I’m currently looking to expand the business further and just finished my search for 3 brand representatives to spread the Traditional Heart word. I will be embarking on another silversmith course this September, and aim to add more sterling silver handmade pieces to the shop, so keep your eyes peeled!
