Rockin Poppet – Featured Mom Small Business

Like so many of us, Bebee found herself to be a new mom searching markets and on line stores for something different.  Then she said, “Why not do it myself?”  So she dusted off the old Visual Arts and Textile skills from her schooling days and upgraded the sewing machine.

Rockin Poppet is a new solo operated brand specialising in limited addition, punk rock inspired, appliqué baby singlets and hoodies. She has only just opened in March of 2015 – so keep checking for more listings to come. Follow Rockin Poppet on Instagram to stay in touch with the latest fabrics and ideas for a custom order!

Here is my interview with Bebee Maree:

PM: When was your company founded and where are you based?

BM: I am based in Newcastle, NSW Australia and I am proud to call it home! I only officially started Rockin Poppet in April 2015 when I finally worked up the courage to start up an Instagram page (previously a social media novice…well, I still am with no personal accounts to speak of) and this slowly merged into Facebook and Etsy, so I am open to any advice around managing social media as this is not my strong suit :-/ I would much rather spend my entire time making.

PM: How many are involved in your company?

BM: Me, myself and I – from the ideas, purchasing, designing, sketching, cutting, pinning, ironing, stitching, ordering, invoicing, packaging, posting, marketing (or should I say an attempt at social media), photography and customer service. It would be a dream for it to become something where I could ’employ’ some assistance but for now I love the variety, self-management and the creative freedom of it all. I should thank my husband and my gorgeous sister that help me set up at markets…for free – love you!Rockin Poppet 1

PM: What inspired you to start your company?

BM: Having my daughter. I have always appreciated different arts and dabbled in various types over the years with a true love of drawing and sewing. I was on the look out for some cool clothes to dress her in (which attracted me to Etsy when I was pregnant) and thought I want to give it a go myself. I had a lot of encouragement from my family to do it in my spare time (baby naps = not a lot of time) as they knew creating was a great passion of mine. Rockin clothes for little Poppets ~ Rockin Poppet it had to be.

PM: Did you have a background in business prior to starting your company?

BM: Yes, I had worked in the corporate sector for 10 years – starting in sales, territory management and moving into front line management (which was like running a small business). So multitasking is actually something I enjoy and a real necessity when you have a baby in hand as well.

PM: Did you run into any problems or resistance while launching?

BM: To be honest I still am launching it’s only early days, it’s still slow and steady while I organise my listings on Etsy, and present at local markets in between creating the works that are constantly in my head. That’s how this journey has unfolded, when I made something new, I listed it and I was never in a mad rush. It is the biggest ‘no no’ but it’s a great balance currently. This is why social media is my biggest hurdle as it’s not a strength of mine or something that comes naturally to me. My first post ever on Instagram was a quote “You don’t need a reason for doing everything in your life. Do it because you want to, because its fun, because it makes you happy” I still need that as a constant reminder. That’s what I want this to be.

PM: How do you get the most out of your day?

BM: Time management and prioritising, but with a toddler around this can easily get flipped on its head (and I forgot coffee, definitely coffee). I used to work from home sometimes in my previous job so I became self-disciplined in getting things done without someone watching me. I probably crack the whip harder than anyone else anyway ha ha!

PM: How is your family apart of your business choices?

BM:It is the number one part, they inspire me, they help me maintain focus on what is important and they are the reason I even had the guts to try.

PM: What music inspires you?

BM: I was an 80’s baby that grew up in a 70’s Rock loving family, which also encouraged the appreciation of all types of music. I was lucky enough to be taken to concerts from a young age and I think this developed my heavy ear, which grew into a love of Grunge and Punk Rock. So I always say Rockin Poppet is ‘Punk Rock inspired’ I guess it takes me back to a day when you did make all your decisions based on what makes you happy.

PM: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?

BM: We have a morning ritual on the weekends when we are all together to get up early, head to the beach and grab a coffee. It’s a combination of all things I love and its bliss! Sunrise, ocean breeze, coffee and family.

PM: What do you see in the future for your shop?Rockin Poppet 3

BM: I am working on what I call #personalisedpunk which I am just about to launch at a local market and then I will
update my Etsy store with all things Punk and Personalized just for your Poppets xx
