Lucky Sew and Sew is a small women-run business in the UK that sells beautiful handmade lingerie and bikinis based on original vintage patterns. A bit of retro glam with the modern woman in mind.

Punky Moms have always been a fan of the simple and elegant lingerie styles of the past and we love that Lucky Sew and Sew focuses a lot of their pieces on true vintage patterns. This mother and daughter team add their own personal touch by updating these vintage designs with more modern day fittings. Updates include stretch fabrics, elastics and hook and eye closures. They really have found a fantastic compromise between vintage and contemporary handmade lingerie.

PM: When was your company founded and where are you based?

LS: The idea of Lucky Sew and Sew started brewing in late 2013. We spent a while testing samples and ideas, and our first collection was released in April 2014 in our Etsy shop.

We are based in the sunny town of Southend-On-Sea,  Essex in the UK. It’s great to live in a sea-side town as there’s lots of lovely little places you can walk to to clear your head when your creative mind clouds over!

PM: How many are involved in your company?

LS: Lucky Sew and Sew is run by my Mum (Diane) and I (Carly). We do every part of our business ourselves, and it can get pretty tough to juggle everything! Although we have been running for 2 years now, I still feel like we are new and we are still learning lessons with every choice we take. We try and share the responsibilities of Lucky equally, but as Mum still has a day-job, we have to take that into account. I manage the product development, social media and photography aspects, whilst Mum manages the finances such as pricing, the product sampling and we both share the sewing – that’s the best part!

PM: What inspired you to start your company?

LS: The want to have something that I couldn’t find anywhere else.  I first touched a sewing machine after my son was born in late 2012 as I wanted to sew a vintage style dress in a particular fabric. It really started a life-long love affair with sewing then. I moved on from sewing dresses to sewing my own lingerie as I couldn’t find the kind of lingerie that I wanted to wear in the shops. I’ve not got a ‘conventional’ body shape and have always found it difficult to find clothes that fit my body well, and are also in styles that I like to wear. Mum has always sewn and we started to sew together and evolve our ideas together. We decided we’d open an Etsy shop and put our handmade lingerie on there to test the waters and see if people liked our knickers (ba-dum-bum), and it just went from there.

PM:Did you have a background in business prior to starting your company?

LS: No, not at all! The only thing I knew about business was that I knew I didn’t want to work for anybody else. I think that was enough motivation to try and make this work. The thought of returning to work whilst my son was so little made me want to cry, I just couldn’t bear it. The best advice I can give anyone who has an idea for a business that they want to start, and are unsure of whether to take the plunge or not – is to just do it! We owe it to ourselves to do what sets our soul on fire and gets us excited and happy. Life is short. Too short to not do what you love.

PM: Did you run into any problems or resistance while was launching?

LS: Not as such, as we launched via our Etsy shop, it was quite straight forward. As we’ve learnt how to utilise social media and start an Instagram account, our following has slowly increased and our orders have too as a result. I see it as a marathon and not as a race. Our business has matured and become busier as our following grows, and that works well for us as we managed a lot of our teething problems before we were really busy. Now that we are busier we are more streamlined and efficient, (and have a better idea of what we are doing!) so it’s worked in our favour to have a low-key launch.

PM: How do you get the most out of your day?

LS: This is something I am still working on! When Lucky Sew and Sew started, I had my son. I now also have a daughter, so time can be tough to manage. I have to remind myself sometimes to not be so hard on myself and not set unrealistic goals. As long as I know I am working my hardest, then that’s all that matters. I find that if I set myself goals such as ‘today I will complete x amount of orders’, and it’s one of those days when the children are craving my constant attention and it’s impossible to get any work done, then I become stressed that I haven’t achieved my goal. Whereas if I take it as it comes, and sew when I get the chance without any goals of how much to do, then I am satisfied at how much I have managed to achieve. I try and do admin during the day as it’s easier to do this in short bursts whilst the children are entertained, and I then sew like a mad woman when they are asleep in the evenings.

PM: How is your family a part of your business choices?

LSS: My family is a massive part of my business. As I mentioned, Lucky is a family business, run by myself and my partner in crime, my Mum. We’ve also been known to rope in my Dad and my husband to lend a helping hand when we’re super busy (Dad is a dab hand at sewing too!).

Family is extremely important to us, and one of the main reasons I wanted to work for myself was so that I can be at home with my children, and not miss out on these important years whilst they’re little. I also think it’s really important to teach children from a young age to be creative, to have dreams and ambitions and to be confident in your choices, and most importantly – to do what makes you happy! I hope that’s the example I am setting them when they see me working from home, and sewing away in my work space.

Working for myself means that I can set my own hours, which is something I needed. We are a biker family and it’s important to us that I can work around our extended family’s events and still manage to join in and be a part of our lifestyle.  Our biker family is a big extension of our own family and it’s such a great environment to be involved in.

PM: What music inspires you?

I have a really wide and eclectic taste in music – I don’t have a specific style that is my favourite. I listen to such a variety depending on my mood. My favourite things to listen to whilst sewing are Ska, rockabilly, northern soul and reggae. My favourite things to listen to whilst designing and sketching is 80’s soul and 50’s rock. I have fond memories of being a child and listening to my Dad’s vinyl record collection on a Sunday, and a lot of my taste in music comes from him.

PM: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?

I have a few hobbies apart from sewing (which is obviously number 1!), that I like to do when/if the time and opportunity arises. I love to go for long walks and hikes with my husband, or to go for a ride on his motorbike. We love to take the children for a picnic and visit a historical property and just enjoy their company! These little years run away too fast! My favourite thing of all, is just to slow down and enjoy life. It’s really easy when you’re busy to get caught up in the little things and get wrapped up in your own head/your business etc, so I like to sit back sometimes and really count my blessings.

PM: What do you see in the future for your shop?

This is something I ponder often. At the moment we have just launched our very first swimwear collection which is being received really well, and there are a few other new products in the pipelines too. Nursing bras is the next item on the agenda, I have been breastfeeding my daughter for a year and it’s taken me this long to sew a nursing bra! I’m really excited about that one. I have just finished up the first sample and it’s my favourite thing that I’ve ever created.

Hopefully in the future we can perhaps stock a few boutiques or independant shops, and test out a few other avenues for us as at the moment we only sell via our Etsy shop. Most importantly, I hope to keep creating handmade lingerie that empowers women and makes them appreciate their bodies and feel amazing in their own skin – that’s the goal!
