Grow Wild Studio is a design + screen printing studio based in Washington, DC. Started by a mother of two, Grow Wild’s empowering themes blend bold, cut & paste styles with a hand illustrated, hand lettered approach to design. Her line of feminist kid clothes is amazing!
We are totally digging it!
PM: When was your company founded?
Grow Wild began in 2012.
PM: Where are you based out of?
Currently I am based in Washington, DC.
PM: How many are involved in the company?
Just one, me!
PM: What inspired you to start the company?
After I had kids, I was annoyed by the amount of gender role reinforcement present in so much of the children’s clothing I was seeing. I wanted an empowering, feminist alternative, so I decided to make my own.
PM: Did you have a background in crafting prior to starting the company?
I have been screen printing since I was a teenager in the 1990’s. My background is mostly in band t-shirts and posters, so it hasn’t been too much of a leap to do the Grow Wild designs.
PM: Did you run into any problems or resistance while launching your company?
Not enough time in the day! Working on a constrained budget to create designs and invest in materials. I wish I could produce designs more quickly because I have so many ideas, but as a mother of two young children, I have to be realistic about what I can get done.
PM: What is the most exciting part of running your own business?
The freedom is amazing. Being able to solve problems creatively and without any bureaucratic restraint means that I can respond quickly and efficiently. Having no boundaries on whatever designs I want to do and in what order is also very satisfying as an artist.
PM: What do you see in the future?
Adding more designs, exploring different fabric printing techniques, and meeting lots of awesome, inspirational fellow artists & moms along the way.
