Made up of Inara George, Becky Stark, Eleni Mandell, and Alex Lilly, The Living Sisters are a folk/rock “supergroup” of sorts. These ladies combine to make music in a throwback style, similar to the chanteuses of old and the harmonies that propelled their music to great heights. I can’t help but compare them, at least in spirit, to the Andrews Sisters songs I heard from my parent’s generation.
Though a recent discovery for me, The Living Sisters started somewhere in Los Angeles in 2005 or 2006. The women of The Living Sisters each have their own musical bloodline. Inara George is one-half of jazz/pop purveyors, The Bird and the Bee (as well as the daughter of Lowell George of Little Feat fame and the god-daughter of LA rocker Jackson Browne), Becky Stark is the front-woman of chamber pop outfit, Lavender Diamond, Alex Lilly performs as Obi Best, and Eleni Mandell has a solo career.
The Living Sisters combine all these influences and blend their voices into something different and unique. Mandell has been quoted in promotional material as saying “… there’s something about us four singing harmony that is almost like religion … [when] voices are resonating together, it’s a very spiritual feeling.”
The Living Sisters have most recently released a fantastic holiday themed album entitled “Harmony is Real: Songs for a Happy Holiday” and are featured in a fantastic and funny video directed by Michel Gondry for their song “How Are You Doing?” from their 2010 album “Love to Live.” Listen to it below.
Want More Female Musicians?
Other women making great music and recommended for your listening pleasure are country artist Dori Freeman and hard-to-categorize singer/songwriter Julia Holter. Check out all these women and tell me we don’t need an updated showcase like the old Lilith Fair to get them the attention they deserve!
George is a dad of 3 (2 young adults and one teen), who has dragged each of them to music fests and concert halls to properly indoctrinate them to the best in music. He is a big fan of Orlando City Soccer Club and a proud grad of UCF and Rollins College. See his previous post about an all female Mariachi band.
