SAGA – A Modern Twisted Comic Book We Are Loving

SAGA. A Comic Book That Will Make You Forget You Are Reading A Comic Book! War, Childhood, Love, Sex, Mothers-in-Law, and a Lying Cat.

War, Childhood, Love, Sex, Mothers-in-Law, Robots with Televisions for heads, and a Lying Cat.

These are just some of the themes and characters in a wonderful comic book series named SAGA. SAGA is written by Brian K. Vaughan, an Eisner Award winner, and the author of many other comic series. His story is brought to amazing life by artist Fiona Staples. It is the most original science fiction I have ever encountered and rivals anything you can imagine. The Onion’s A.V. Club called SAGA, “the emotional epic Hollywood wishes it could make.”

A reviewer for GoodBooks describes the comic as this: “It’s like someone took Firefly, coated it liberally in WTF, and sprinkled a little Quentin Tarantino on top.” After writing many reviews of books, films, TV and music, I am unable to adequately summarize or demonstrate how crazy, subversive, sweet, deviant, and outlandish SAGA is.

SAGA is about an unlikely couple, Marko and Alana, from two warring planets, who fall in love and have a child named Hazel. Hazel acts as our narrator through the series. These lovers are pariahs to both of their worlds. Their love must be stopped at all costs, since to show two such different beings can co-exist and raise a family would possibly end the war which dominates their galaxy and is, seemingly, the “raison d’etre” of the freaks which populate it.

Saga Comic Book Review - SAGA. A Comic Book That Will Make You Forget You Are Reading A Comic Book! War, Childhood, Love, Sex, Mothers-in-Law, and a Lying Cat.

The series is available in single issues, but I have read the issues in trade-paperback form through the latest volume, No. 5. Volume 6 became available in late June and is described thusly: “After a dramatic time jump, the three-time Eisner Award winner for Best Continuing Series continues to evolve, as Hazel begins the most exciting adventure of her life: kindergarten.”

I simply cannot wait to find out what is in store for Hazel and the heroes and villains that populate SAGA. I believe you will be as swept up in their story as I.
